Stars of Light

star picA few years ago, I found myself wondering what our kids at church could do to connect with the families in our community during the Christmas season. Our local food pantry was in the middle of a collection drive, stockpiling non-perishable items which would soon be given to families needing assistance for the holidays. I knew our kids were great at encouragement. And I knew that families going through difficult times needed the encouragement of Jesus.

So I asked the food pantry staff if we could make refrigerator magnets with scripture verses that would be distributed along with the groceries that every family would receive. They were delighted that our kids would be willing to do that for the families.

Fast forward to this Christmas. Working with the fifth and sixth graders we are teaching, we produced 35 star magnets, proclaiming Isaiah 9:6, “For a child is given to us..” as we included the entire verse so those reading it would know that Jesus is the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Each time the families opened their refrigerator, they would be reminded again of the qualities of the Savior we are celebrating.

After we completed the stars, I stopped by the food pantry to deliver them. The staff’s pleasure was evident as they hinted they might need more so every family could have one. Sure enough, I received the phone call that afternoon—they would need 40 more to service every family. So last Sunday we created 45 more and prayed together for the families that would receive them.  It turned out to be a great investment in the lives of our children as they invested in the lives of others.

You could do this simple project with your family this season. Here is what you will need:

Star Magnets

Materials  Needed – Pre-cut foam stars (about 7diameter), 2” cookie cutter or stencil, scrapbook paper or wrapping paper in different prints, scissors, glue or glue stick, magnetic strip or 1 ½” square of magnetic material (self-adhesive works well), printable address labels with Isaiah 9:6 printed on it

Directions –

  • Trace the 2” star onto the back side of the wrapping paper or scrapbook paper. Cut out star.
  • Glue the 2” star in centered position on the foam star.
  • Glue the address label (already printed with Isaiah 9:6 on it) onto the foam star, centered at the bottom of the star. (Gluing is necessary, or the label will eventually peel away from the foam.)
  • Remove the adhesive from the magnetic strip or square and adhere to the back of the foam star. (Or glue to the back if the magnetic material is not self-adhesive.)

Take a moment and post a picture on our KidZ KaN Facebook page so we can see the beautiful stars your family made.
